Website tips for Australian businesses

30 practical tips to make your website faster, easier to find on Google and AI search, and better at turning visitors into enquiries. From the Front Row Media team in Sydney.

Website tips

Make your phone number and main button easy to find

Most visitors are on a phone. Put your phone number and one clear action (Book, Call or Get a quote) at the top of every page, and repeat the button after each main section. Use tap-to-call links so people can ring you in one tap.

Speed up your website

Slow pages lose visitors and rankings. Compress images and save them as WebP (Squoosh is a free tool for this), remove plugins you no longer use, and use good hosting with caching. Aim for pages that load in two to three seconds on a phone, and test any page with Google PageSpeed Insights. A free website audit shows your Google PageSpeed scores.

Write for your customers, not for yourself

Lead with the problem you solve and who you help, in plain words. Short paragraphs, clear headings and real examples work better than long blocks of text. Give each service its own page. The Australian Government Style Manual has a good guide to plain language.

Show people they can trust you

Add Google reviews (Google has tips to get more reviews), client logos, case studies, photos of your team and your ABN and address. Trust signals help people choose you, and they help Google too.

Keep your forms short

Ask only for what you need, usually a name, an email or phone number and a message. Every extra field loses enquiries. Show a clear thank-you message and reply quickly.

SEO & Google tips

Complete your Google Business Profile

For local businesses this is often the quickest win. Claim your free Google Business Profile, then fill in every section, choose the right categories, add photos, post updates and ask happy clients for reviews.

Give every page a clear title and description

The page title (about 50 to 60 characters) and meta description (about 150 to 160) are what people see in Google. Include the main search term and your area, and make them read naturally. Google explains how it picks title links and descriptions.

Have one page for each service and area

Google ranks pages, not whole websites. A separate, genuinely helpful page for each service, and for the key areas you serve, gives you more chances to show up. The Google SEO Starter Guide is a good place to start.

Publish helpful content regularly

Answer the questions customers ask before they buy. Articles and FAQs build trust, bring in new searches and give you something to share on social media and in emails. See the Google guide to creating helpful content.

Use Google Search Console

Google Search Console is free and shows the searches people use to find you, which pages Google has indexed and any problems it found. If you do not have it set up yet, we can do it for you.

AI search tips

Answer common questions clearly on your site

Write direct answers to the questions people ask: what you do, where, how it works and typical prices. FAQ sections with short, factual answers are easy for AI tools to read and quote.

Add business schema

Structured data (schema) gives search engines and AI tools your business name, services, location, hours and reviews in a format they read reliably. Test yours with the Google Rich Results Test, and see the LocalBusiness type on Schema.org.

Keep your business details the same everywhere

Use exactly the same business name, address, phone number and website on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social media. Consistent details help AI tools trust that it is you. Many AI tools also draw on Bing, so claim your listing on Bing Places too.

Do not block AI tools by accident

Some security settings and robots.txt rules stop AI crawlers from reading your website. A free website audit checks this for you.

Branding & design tips

Use your logo, colours and fonts consistently

Choose two or three brand colours (Coolors helps you build a palette) and one or two fonts (Google Fonts are free), and use them on your website, social media, emails and print. Consistency makes you recognisable.

Photos of your team, your work and your premises build trust faster than stock images. Keep them bright and similar in style.

Make everything easy to read

Strong contrast between text and background, body text of at least 16px and plenty of white space help everyone, including people with low vision. Check your colours with the WebAIM contrast checker.

Marketing tips

Post regularly on one or two channels

It is better to post consistently where your customers are than to spread yourself thin across every platform. Plan a month of posts ahead; Meta Business Suite lets you schedule Facebook and Instagram posts.

Build an email list

Email is a channel you own. Offer something useful, like a checklist, tips or early offers, in exchange for an email address, and send a short, helpful newsletter regularly.

Use HTTPS and strong logins

An SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser) is essential. Use strong, unique passwords, turn on two-factor login and remove old user accounts. Check if your email has been in a data breach at Have I Been Pwned, and see cyber.gov.au for more security advice.
